Pedestrians Struck and Killed by Car in Aurora

Two sisters recently died in Aurora after being hit by a car while walking on a sidewalk, a tragic reminder of the risk of accidents involving pedestrians.

The unidentified pedestrians, along with a third person who suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, were mowed down by an out-of-control van, 9News reports. The driver of the vehicle was also killed in the collision, while a passenger was injured.

The women—local residents who were in their 60s—were reportedly walking on a sidewalk near Iliff Avenue just east of South Buckley Road at the time of the crash. The van struck them after the driver appeared to have some sort of medical incident, according to the Aurora Police Department.

“The driver was experiencing a medical emergency, resulting in a loss of control of the vehicle,” police said in a statement on the department’s website. “The van ran off the road, onto the sidewalk and struck the pedestrians. The van came to a complete stop after crashing into a tree.”

Legal Rights for People Injured in Pedestrian Accidents

As this tragic story shows, pedestrian accidents can and do happen. They often come with severe or fatal injuries for pedestrians who have little time to react to oncoming cars.

More than 6,200 people are killed in pedestrian accidents across the country each year. Unfortunately, that number has skyrocketed by more than 50% over the last decade.

A pedestrian who is injured in a collision with a vehicle in Colorado has the right to seek compensation from those responsible. That includes negligent drivers, government authorities who poorly design streets and sidewalks and others.

The money damages typically available in these cases include compensation for medical bills, missed wages during recuperation and any long-term impact on the injured person’s ability to make a living or participate in day-to-day life. In the tragic event that a pedestrian is killed in a crash, his or her loved ones can seek similar compensation for wrongful death
