Drugged Driver Suspected in Colorado Crash that Killed Boy

A Colorado man was recently apprehended in Las Vegas, some seven months after local police say he killed a five-year-old boy in a drugged driving accident.

Demetrius Dunbar was arrested on Dec. 10 for his role in the fatal crash, according to KKTV. Dunbar was charged with vehicular homicide, child abuse resulting in death, vehicular assault, and drug possession, along with a number of misdemeanors.

The crash occurred on May 27 in Fountain, about 10 miles south of Colorado Springs, when a pickup truck collided with a sport utility vehicle. The SUV spun into oncoming traffic and collided with a third vehicle. The impact caused the boy, a three-year-old girl, and an adult woman to be ejected from the SUV. None of the three were using seat belts or car seats at the time of the crash, according to a police report.

Police said they believe Dunbar was “under the influence of narcotics” at the time of the crash, but did not further specify the basis for the charges against him.

Legal Rights for People Injured in Drugged Driving Accidents

The tragic crash in Fountain is yet another reminder of how reckless it is for a person to get behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drunk and drugged driving often leads to serious accidents that can cause fatal or life-altering injuries.

Colorado saw 168 fatal car accidents involving an impaired driver in the first 10 months of this year, up 14% across the state from the same stretch last year. That is despite significantly less vehicle traffic statewide as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported earlier this year that drivers were engaging in more risky behavior behind the wheel during the early height of the pandemic. That includes speeding and driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The good news for anyone injured in a car crash in Colorado is that you have the right to seek compensation from those responsible. An experienced accident attorney can help you get money damages for medical bills, missed wages, property damage, and any impact of the crash on your earning capacity.
