Colorado Springs Sees Spike in Deadly Car Crashes

Last year was the deadliest for people on roads in Colorado Springs as the city saw the highest rate of traffic fatalities despite the pandemic.

A total of 51 people were killed in traffic accidents across Colorado Springs in 2020, KKTV reports. That is up from 42 deaths in 2019 and 48 deaths in 2018, according to information provided by the Colorado Springs Police Department.

The rise in fatalities came as more people stayed home and off of the roads in response to the spread of Covid-19. CSPD did not offer a reason for the increase, other than to say “this looks like it may be a trend.”

Our Denver car accident lawyer, in a review of the nationwide data, notes that drivers may be more willing to speed and engage in other dangerous activity behind the wheel as the pandemic forced many cars off the street. Speeding, drunk and drugged driving were all on the rise in the initial months of the pandemic, according to a study from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“The reduction in traffic volume coupled with community efforts to reduce law enforcement personnel exposure by implementing changes in law enforcement activity provided drivers a greater opportunity to speed,” NHTSA said when it released the study. “Additionally, there is evidence of increased alcohol use and higher drug use (including marijuana and opioids).”

Compensation for Denver Car Accident Injuries and Deaths

Anyone who is injured in a car accident in Colorado has the right to seek compensation from those responsible, whether it is an aggressive or drunk driver or defective auto manufacturer.

In the tragic case that a person or dies in a crash, his or her loved ones can also seek compensation. No amount of money can undo an accident or take away the pain that comes with losing a loved one. This compensation can, however, ease the financial burden that often comes when a family member’s life is cut short.

To get that compensation, you generally have to be able to prove that the person or entity responsible for the crash was negligent, or failed to live up to a legal duty. Drivers, for instance, have a duty to operate their vehicles in a reasonably safe manner. Car manufacturers, similarly, have a duty to put cars on the road that are reasonably safe to use. When drivers or manufacturers do not meet that duty, they are negligent and liable for any accidents that happen as a result.
