Colorado Mom Dies in Motorcycle Crash While Honoring Son Killed in Wreck

by  on  Car Accidents & Motor Vehicle Collisions

A pair of tragic accidents shines an unfortunate light on the risks that come with getting on a motorcycle.

Fort Collins resident Diane Everett was recently killed in a motorcycle accident after losing control of her bike, according to the Associated Press. Everett was one of some 80 bikers who had come together for a memorial ride for her son, Michael Everett, who died in a motorcycle accident in early April.

Everett’s stepson, Joshua, described the tragic scene as bikers behind the accident were signaled to slow and stop, in an interview with the Coloradoan.

“As we were getting closer, I could see bike parts and I think we both knew what happened,” Joshua told the Coloradoan. “All I could think of was, ‘Not again. I can’t lose two of them.’”

Witnesses reportedly said Everett lost control of her bike while swerving to avoid a horse on the rural road. She was thrown from the bike when it went into a ditch and struck a culvert, according to the Coloradoan.

The ride took place near one of Michael Everett’s favorite stretches for hitting the road on a motorcycle, according to the AP. His mother was riding one of Michael’s motorcycles – a Harley Davidson – at the time of the accident.

“Our mother was one hell of a mother who wore her emotions on her sleeve,” Joshua Everett told the Coloradoan. “Right now we are trying to be strong for my dad, who is hurting. We are trying to be as strong as I know our mother would be.”

A total of 137 motorcyclists were killed in accidents in Colorado last year, according to the Coloradoan. That figure was one-third higher than the previous year, even as many people stayed off of the road and in their homes during the coronavirus pandemic.
