Colorado Father and Son Killed by Drunk Driver in Thornton

The driver responsible for a recent car accident that killed a Colorado father and his seven-year-old son had a blood alcohol content level that was four times the legal limit at the time of the crash, according to a newly released toxicology report.

Travis Butts’ BAC was .380 when the collision occurred at the corner of East 120th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, CBS4 reports. He was also going 102 miles per hour and ran a red light, causing the accident.

The Subaru Forrester that Butts was driving slammed into a GMC Yukon, killing 32-year-old driver Brett Chapman and his son Blaine. Butts also died in the crash.

The tragic accident is just the latest example of the devastating and completely preventable harm that can come when a person decides to get behind the wheel while intoxicated.

“Although accidents of this kind are rare in Thornton, we should all use this deep loss of life as a reminder to have serious conversations about driving under the influence, speeding, aggressive driving, and general driving safety,” the Thornton Police Department said in a statement. “Talk to your loved ones, regardless of age, and impress upon them the importance.”

How to Fight Back After a Drunk Driving Accident

It has long been clear that drunk driving is not only illegal but also reckless and the cause of countless unnecessary deaths in Colorado and across the country every year. And still, people get behind the wheel while intoxicated every single day.

Colorado law gives people and families whose lives have been devastated by drunk drivers the right to fight back by seeking compensation from those responsible (and their insurers). This money is never going to replace a loved one or allow you to go back in time and stop a crash from happening. It can, however, help you pick up the pieces by easing some of the financial burdens that can come with being injured or losing a loved one in an accident.

It is vital that you have a seasoned car accident lawyer in your corner. Insurance companies in particular often look to push low ball settlement offers in the immediate aftermath of a crash. An experienced attorney can help you identify those responsible, determine the value of your case and maximize your compensation.
