CDOT to Colorado Drivers: Winter is Coming

Winter is just around the corner and our Denver auto accident lawyer, as well as the Colorado Department of Transportation, wants drivers to be ready for when temperatures dip and the snow starts to fall.

CDOT is warning drivers across the state that they should prepare for winter weather, Summit Daily reports. That includes being aware of new traction requirements, as well as making sure their cars are in good working order and ready in case of an emergency.

“Don’t put yourself in a situation you may not be able to handle,” CDOT spokesperson Elise Thatcher told the news outlet. “Often when we’re helping someone, they’ll tell us they didn’t realize the conditions were that challenging.”

A new law passed in August requires cars to have tires with at least 3/16 tread to drive on state highways in snowy conditions. It also allows motorists to instead use chains or an alternative traction device, like an AutoSock.

Infractions will cost drivers anywhere from $130 to $650 in fines and surcharges, depending on the circumstances.

Thatcher told Summit Daily that it is a good idea for motorists to bring their cars in for routine maintenance to reduce the risk of breaking down. They should also have an emergency kit in their vehicles so that they are prepared in the event of an accident.

Perhaps most important, CDOT wants drivers to be aware of the conditions and weather forecast before they hit the road.
