Colorado Springs Hit and Run Leaves Two Injured

A driver recently fled on foot after being involved in a car accident in Colorado Springs that seriously injured two other people, according to a local news report.

Officers investigating the wreck found the driver who fled had been driving east on Astrozon Boulevard and tried to cross the intersection of South Chelton Road against the signal when the second vehicle headed north on Chelton ran into the first,” the Colorado Springs Gazette reports.

Hit and run accidents like this one are far too common in Colorado and across the country. More than 730,000 hit and run accidents happen nationwide each year, according to the American Automobile Association. Those crashes cause more than 2,000 deaths per year, AAA says.

This, unfortunately, is not the first time that this particular intersection has been the site of a serious accident. Multiple people were taken to the hospital with injuries in February after two sport utility vehicles collided at the intersection. Police said at the time that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

Legal Rights in Hit and Run Crashes

Anyone who is injured in a car accident in Colorado, regardless of whether it is a hit and run, has the right to seek compensation from those responsible.

The money damages often available in Colorado car accident cases is designed to compensate an injured person for the financial impact of the crash. The compensation includes money for medical bills, missed wages, property damage and any reduction in long-term earning capacity. When a person is tragically killed in an accident, his or her loved ones can seek similar compensation for wrongful death.

Negligent drivers are generally liable for any injuries they cause under Colorado law. Drivers have a responsibility to operate their cars in a reasonably safe manner and to refrain from dangerous behavior like speeding and driving while intoxicated. Those who do not live up to this standard are considered negligent.

Identifying the responsible driver can be difficult in a hit and run accident, where one driver declines to stick around and trade insurance information or wait for the police to turn up.

At Levine Law, we have had significant success helping people injured in hit and run accidents get compensation for their injuries.
